You should provide your red eared slider with a well managed and established tank, that equipped all the important features. One of the most important pieces of equipment to have is the best filter for red eared slider tank.
Ending up with the wrong filter for your tank is not just going to be a waste of your money, but also a potential danger for your red eared sliders too. To ensure that your slider will live a long happy life in their tank, here are some type of filters that you should avoid or carefully consider before purchase on.
#1 Under gravel filters
Many owners still use this type of filter for their red eared slider tank because they are cheap. But they only should be used as secondary filter. Personally, I’m not prefer to use them. I used to use under-gravel filters for my red eared slider tank, but I don’t anymore.
The biggest problem with UGF is they as the time goes, they will get clogged. Some of the slider’s waste and leftovers food would get drawn down really deep down into the gravel, clog things up and increase the levels of bed bacteria, ammonia and nitrites.
I also don’t like the deafening noise that they make in the tank. The red-eared sliders may dig through gravels, stirring up the trapped debris. UGF even does not work really effective as They don’t provide great mechanical nor chemical filtration. They might be fine for fish, but They typically won’t be powerful enough for red eared slider.
#2 A filer dose not comes with warranty
Apart from your tank, the filter is probably going to be the most expensive equipment you invest for your red eared slider. You might have to pay hundreds of dollars for it. So, ensure that you do not spend your money for product that is just going to break after a few months or arrive with a broken part.
There is always the case that your filter’s moving parts break in the delivery process of if you do not know how to proper mount it. This is why it is important to choose a filter that comes with a warranty. And the stronger the warranty, the better.
Typically, a well-known reliable brand will offer you a good and preferably multi-year warranty. Also, be careful with the warranty that only apply to things like the motor.
